Here's a spiraling good time - a large stoneware pottery ashtray made by California potter Robert Maxwell, ca. 1960's. The singular grey white glaze creates a beautiful effect as the middle spiral pushes the eye to the edges. This piece appears to not have been used, or used very little.
(often referred to as "Mr. Max") was a influential California-based ceramicist and designer known for hisMid-Century Modern (MCM) pottery and whimsical clay creatures called "critters" or "beasties". Active primarily in the 1960s-70s, he revolutionized large-scale studio pottery through innovative slip-casting techniques and specialized glazes.
